Think about all of the movies that are loved the most, or hated the most, or actually thought about the most, and there is a very good chance that some of them are horror movies. Scary films have been known to be box office gold for years, and for very good reason. People just love to sit in the dark getting sacred stupid with each other.
Think about what kind of movie most would like to take a date to. Sure, the romantic comedy is the staple fare, but it is the scary flick that will get those two sitting all snuggly close and holding on to each other. And everybody just likes to be frightened when there is no real danger involved. It is like a roller coaster ride, fear without real fate involved.
But while they were screaming and jumping around like little kids in the dark, did they ever think about who is behind those films? What kinds of jobs could someone get that allowed them to make one of those films? Then instead of being just another geek at the film festival, they could have their own booth and be taking it to the bank by selling scary movies and memorabilia.
The reason it is such an easy opening opportunity is because so many of them are done so cheaply. It is no film making secret that scary movies can be made on the cheap and still turn a profit. In fact, some have gone on to tremendous success after being made on the lowest of the low budgets. So with no money to spend they cannot hire big names. Here is where newbies, the vast unknown field of talent, can get that elusive first gig.
Think about the makeup guys. Some of them are more famous than the directors, because they are the ones making the splatter so real, and the monsters so scary looking. But it is a good bet they started out stealing makeup from their mom and dressing up the family dog. Artists have to start somewhere, so here is a good spot to try to be an assistant or something.
And what about writing a script? It seems that a writer could distill the essence of every great scary film into a simple formula. It could probably be described in about four sentences. And that right there is the seed for a new film script. Just add in some new characters and locations and it may actually be on to something big. Again, all famous film folk started in the same basic way.
For actors, B-films can be a goldmine of experience and information. If they look decent and can run around screaming pretty good, they could get a leg up in a scary film. Sure, one will not be a principle at first, in fact they will probably get killed off very early in the first reel, but it is a start, and it is verifiable acting work, both of which an actor needs plenty of to move up the ladder in this business.
So instead of paying the hard earned cash out of pocket to get scared by someone else, why not think about using some of that cash to do the scaring professionally? Many good, respectable careers have been started on the low budget B-film horror circuit. It is safe to say that others could, too, and could actually make a living with horror movies. - 40731
