The Different DJ Equipment

By Marline Hedgespeth

Historically, a DJ setup has consisted of two turntables, a mixer and some speakers. Today, however, we already have so many technological innovations that DJs can choose in the selecting so many ways of playing their music. They can use turntables, CD turntables, computer software or any combination therein. Each of these categories are described more in detail in their own sections.

Turntables - While these might look like those things your parents played records on, the similarities end there. DJ turntables offer several features not found on a regular turntable. The most important of these is the ability to increase or decrease the speed that the record is moving. This would allow you to match the tempo of any two songs so that you will be able to blend them together.

CD Turntables - These are just CD players that can play regular CDs. However, they also allow you to change the tempo of a song so that you can mix it into another. Many Djs today would prefer this type of turntable, because it allows them to utilize CDs rather than vinyl.

Computer Software - Some DJs today are already turning their heads from the use of turntables to the use of computer software to mix their music. This is a new area of DJing and so many DJs, especially the older ones, have looked down on those people who use this kind of method. However, there are already a lot of famous DJs that are solely performing with the use of the software they call as Ableton Live.

Mixer - A mixer has at least two audio channels which will be connected to whatever you are using to play your music. This allows you to control the volume of each song. The mixer also contains a fader, which can allow you to fade song from one to the other. A DJ further controls the music by using a Mixer's EQ. An EQ can increase or decrease certain frequencies of a song; its treble, mids or bass. A DJ can mix sounds very smoothly, as long as he knows the proper adjustment of its different levels.

Headphones - All DJs need a good set of professional headphones. Those old walkman headphones will just never cut it - only the ones that are considered professional models are packed with increased volume and sound separation that you will need in doing some mixing. - 40731
