A Quick Look At Horror Movies

When it comes to the movie industry you will find no shortage of movie genres to suit your tastes. Those who need a good laugh can find fun in comedy films. There are also action movies for those looking for a bit of excitement, and romantic films to indulge yourself in a great love story. However, if you are in the mood for scary, yet exciting thrills, look no further than horror movies.

In the horror genre you will find many different sub-genres, each offering the audience a different and specific set of thrills and chills. Within these genres, you will find movies that defined exactly what that genre should be. Although personal taste will differ from person to person, there are many movies that are universally respected for their impact on the industry.

One type of horror movie that is very popular and abundant is the "slasher" films. Essentially, slasher films involve a group of innocent victims being terrorized by a stalker or killer of some sort. There are many movies that have contributed to this sub-genre. Some of the more popular ones include the "Halloween" series and the "Scream" series. Both series pit an innocent series of victims against a relentless, knife wielding murderer.

Horror films involving ghosts is also another huge area of the industry that focuses on spectral protagonists to drive the story to frightening places. Ghost have been a fascinating and frightening part of humanity for thousands of years, so it should come as no surprise that that subject has thrived in horror. As one of the most influential movies in the history of film, "The Shining, " is a highly recommended movie. Other popular ones include "Poltergeist" and "The Sixth Sense."

Zombie films are another very interesting horror sub-genre. Zombies have been a part of human culture and folklore for a very long time, making them an ideal candidate for horror. A zombie, or the re-animated body of a dead human, will feed upon the flesh of other living people. These films are also widely known for their underlying social commentary. You will find plenty of genre-defining movies in the "Living Dead" series, as well as plenty of modern re-makes and re-imaginings.

There is no shortage of monsters in the film industry. These monsters take on many different forms, all with their own method of delivering chills. For instance, the "Alien" series is a good example centered on frightening space aliens. Other classic, genre-defining films include "Frankenstein, " "The Mummy, " and "Creature from the black lagoon."

Another great genre that is becoming more and more popular is the type known as "possession" movies. In a possession movie, the victim is taken over by an invisible demonic entity that controls the victims mind and body. The quintessential film in this realm is the classic movie "The Exorcist, " which is often considered not only the greatest possession movie of all time, but one of the greatest horror movies in general. You may also be interested in the "Amityville Horror" franchise, or the recent film "The exorcism of Emily Rose."

Some horror movies serve a very specific purpose for viewers. It gives the viewer a steady dose of thrilling excitement that is both scary, yet entertaining. With so many sub-genres, and both classic and modern examples of those types of movies available, there will be a movie for everyone's taste. - 40731
